WE are THAT house on our block.
The neighbor that takes Halloween to the next level.
We have lived in our current location for twenty years and have slowly been adding (and sometimes subtracting) Halloween home-made decorations to our yard each season. A penchant for classic movie monsters has driven our theme (must educate the next generation), as has a bit of an obsession with all things Disneyania.
“Do you do it for the kids?”
What kids? WE don’t have kids, nor does our street really. There are currently four kids under twelve living on our block of thirty-four homes (yes, we counted). And in our twenty-years here there have never been more than six living here at any one given time. Such is the demographic of a mid-century now-inner-city, ‘hood. That being said, we have historically have entertained between 35 and 75 Halloween night Trick-or-treaters, because we attract them from afar. We really should subsidize the neighbors for their candy as we cause the bump.
What does this have to do with art? Everything. Our yard literally consumes us for nearly two months of the year. We design. We carve. We build. We create. We display. We share. Why? To enrich our community (*snicker) and get accolades from complete strangers. In essence we have built an annual pop exhibition for ourselves to demonstrate and brag about our skills. BAH!
