I guess I have been working with wax resist techniques for much of my life.
As a preschooler, I saw a TV segment on pysanky egg dying and it thrilled me. And while my Mum wasn’t about to let four year-old me use molten wax on my Easter eggs she was game enough to allow me to rub a birthday candle on them so that I could write my name. It was a bit of a leap from PAAS egg kits to silk batik in college but the process is still the same: oil (wax) and water don’t mix. The video today is hella-simple but an understanding of resist techniques can certainly expand the one’s possibilities when experimenting with watercolour paint or ink wash. And kids love it, because it’s… magical (science).
